Counting money for kids

These counting money for kids math games were inspired by my kids playing "ice cream shop".

Before you start, print out and cut out the ice cream and coins. Counting pennies worksheets Give each kid 2 sets of coins.

You could be the shopkeeper for the first game.

To buy an ice cream they want, they have to pay for it with paper coins. The price of the ice cream is stated on the ice cream itself.

As the coins come in sets of 5 or as individual coins, Kids learn to add the numbers 5 and 1.

Little kids can count the coins. Older kids can add them up.

Play the kids math games

Everyone lines up to buy their ice creams.

Each kid points to the ice cream he or she wants.

Then each kid counts the paper coins needed to pay for that ice cream and gives the money to the shopkeeper.

The game ends when a kid runs out of money.

The kid with the most money gets to be the shop keeper.

Counting money for kids at the toy shop

Display some toys.

Let one kid be the shop keeper.

Assign a price to each toy.

Let the kids pick the toys they like and "pay" for them using the paper money.

Each kid has the same amount of money, so they have to budget there expenditure accordingly.
Hopefully, these counting money for kids math games would teach them to be careful with their money. You could play such games with them long before you start giving them their allowance.
